Patching your systems; why should you care?
This week we look at why patching is critical to protecting your business.
Read on to see why patching is so critical to your business!
Patching is the process of applying updates to the software on your devices. In most cases updates will automatically be detected and you will be given the option to install them. Patching may seem frustrating as there are regularly new updates to apply, however these can be crucial for the security of your business.
Every device you own needs patching, especially if it connects to the internet. This includes Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Printers, Routers/Firewalls, Network Switches and many more. Each device likely has firmware and software which needs to be checked for updates and patched.
Firmware
Firmware updates are usually applied directly to the hardware of your device. These types of updates will need to be applied during a reboot of your device. Be very careful not to cut power to your device while this type of update is being performed, or your device may not work at all (known as bricking).
Software
Software updates are often applied while your device is booted, although some may require a restart to complete. Software updates include operating system and application (software which is installed into the operating system) updates.
Failing to patch your devices leaves you open to cyber attack. Patches are there to either fix or add features, or to fix security flaws which have been detected. If you do not patch these security flaws your business data may be stolen or you could be subject to ransomware, or a BEC (business email compromise) attack. In each case there is usually a large financial loss, and possibly reputational loss for your business.
Most systems provide a method for checking and then applying found updates (patches). Here are the common ones:
Windows
Click on Start, type "Check for updates", click on the option by the same name. Follow the prompts to install any updates found.
Mac
Click on the Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), then click Software Update on the right. Follow the prompts to install any updates found.
Android
Go to System Settings, Tap Security and privacy. System and updates. For security updates, tap Security update. For Google Play system updates, tap Google Play system update.
iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
Follow the below tips to keep your devices protected:
Check for updates and apply patches at least once a week.
Remove unused applications to reduce risk.
Where possible, enable automatic updates.
Ensure you are using licenced and supported software and hardware.
